Year 9 District Netball Champions

On Tuesday 6th October, the year 9 netball team competed in the District Netball Tournament held at Scalby School. Abi Smith, the captain, reports on how the match went.

To get us in the mood for our first match against Eskdale, we listened to Amy’s dynamic tunes on the bus beforehand. In the first half, we got off to a great start, scoring 12 in the first half and taking it up to 16 in the second. This was mainly due to our efficient system down the Court. Our second match was against Lady Lumley’s and we had, again, a comfortable win of 9-0. We had a strong defence in play with our tall Goal Keepers and Goal Defences, Amy Hayhurst, Morwenna Talling and Nell Thackeray. We continued to excel throughout the next matches, beating Caedmon and Scalby, the home team, before it came to our arch-hockey rivals, Scarborough College. Yet again, we managed an easy win of 15-0 which was down to our strong tactics and communication.

After this match was Filey which we beat due to excellent interceptions and accurate passes from the centre-court players, Issy Hurst, Polly Mumford and Casey Johnson. And then, in our final match to play, we really went for it to finish on a high and even though half of the team had injuries, we continued on and down to great play in the D and solid shooting from Abi Smith and Phoebe Gurling we were scoring a goal every 30 seconds and the score was 23-0! This was beneficial to help us win the tournament, which we did, conceding 3 goals and scoring 98, we took the trophy home (to add the ever-extending collection!)

It was great to see such determination from all the girls, to keep trying to score more goals even in the games where they were winning easily.
