Regional tournament ends the year 11 netball journey!

On the 28th January, Ryedale school U16 netball team attended the regional netball tournament at Hymers College in Hull having achieved first place in the district tournament and second place in the county tournament.

We had an early start from school, leaving at 7:00 in the morning and arrived in plenty of time to register and thoroughly warm up. Our first match was against Bradford Grammar School and in the first half of the match, we played extremely well and fought for a 6-6 draw at half time. However during the second half, our game became sloppy resulting in Bradford beating us 17-12.

Our second match was against Beverley High and the whole team put in 100% effort. They were a very hard team but we over turned centres and shot well which enabled us to win the match 10-7.

Our third match was against Hill House, they gave us a good game but our team was too strong! The defence played amazing allowing us to secure a 10-2 win. After this match we had our lunch.
After lunch, we got straight back on court to play Wickersley High, the Ryedale school girls played extremely well securing us a 15-8 win.

The most crucial match for the team was Ripon Grammar. Throughout our netball journey Ripon has been the team that we are always eager to win and in the last regional tournament they beat us by 1 goal. Through hard work and utter determination, we beat Ripon 10-6, and for all of the girls, this was the highlight of the day and our whole time together playing netball for Ryedale School.

Our sixth match was against Hull Collegiate. This was our toughest game of the tournament as we needed to win to stay in contention for the National finals and our whole team had an outstanding game. We drew 7-7 but this was a game we felt that we deserved to win.

The final match was against GSAL (Grammar School at Leeds). They are an amazing team coached by the England under 17 manager and to play against such a high standard makes our team realise how far we have progressed. Unfortunately we lost this match 17-6 but altogether we had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Overall in the tournament, we secured 3rd place, just one place away from Nationals! We were so close to achieving second place, and qualifying for the finals.

The whole team would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Green for coaching us for the last 5 years.

Through sheer hard work, tears and determination we have become the 3rd best U16 team in the whole of Yorkshire and we beat Ripon Grammar in our final competitive match against them. We are all sad to have played our last competitive netball game for Ryedale School… what an amazing journey!

Ellie Crowther (Captain)

It was a amazing day, for Ryedale to gain 3rd in Yorkshire its such an fabulous achievement. It will be without a doubt the most memorable day in my career as PE teacher. I was so proud of the girls and couldn’t have asked anything more of them. They were a credit to the school and themselves.
