At Ryedale School we pride ourselves on delivering a transition programme of exceptional quality. The events have been carefully designed not only to equip Year 6 students to cope with the physical transfer to secondary school, but also to ensure they can start their first day happy, confident and able to meet the very high expectations we hold for them.
Please find below details for this year’s transition calendar. If you have any queries regarding the programme, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Wilkinson, Secondary Director, on 01439 771665 or email.
Dates for Year 6 Parents – (To Be Confirmed)
Primary Presentation Evenings
These evenings are the first step in the transition process and involve the Senior Leadership Team of Ryedale School presenting on ‘Moving up to Ryedale’ in six of our feeder primaries. We cover everything from student learning to uniform to extra-curricular opportunities and at the end of the presentations there is opportunity to chat to the staff over coffee and biscuits.
Each presentation begins at 6.30pm and is approximately one hour in duration.
We welcome families living out of catchment to attend any of the above evenings. Please select the most convenient date and venue to yourselves and inform Ms Wilkinson using one of the above contact methods.
Following the Presentation Evenings, parents must register their preference of secondary school with County. The deadline for applications is the 31st October and it is essential that all families meet this deadline.
Parents are informed of the allocation list at the beginning of March via a letter from County.
Year 6 Literacy Week
Once we have our confirmed cohort for September, we write to all parents in early May with final arrangements for the forthcoming events. All of our students receive an invitation to a Literacy Day which takes place during May.
On this day our students are given the opportunity to take part in a range of literacy based activities. In addition to meeting key staff, staying for lunch in the school canteen and meeting Year 6 students from other primaries, the Year 6’s get to take out their first reading book from our school library!
Induction Day
In June, Year 6’s join us for a full day at Ryedale School. They experience a range of lessons in different subject areas and find out which House they have been allocated to. (See The House System for further details.) Students also meet with their Form Tutor for the first time and get to ask as many questions as they like regarding moving up to Ryedale. This day is extremely successful in taking away students’ anxieties about their first day at secondary school.
Open Evening
To Be Confirmed
Ryedale School is open from 6pm onwards for families to walk around, meet staff and engage in the exciting activities in our classrooms. This gives Year 6 students another opportunity to familiarise themselves with the lay out of the school and meet more of the staff. The Senior Leadership Team and Head Boy and Girl present to families in the hall before they go for their tour of the school.
Presentation to Year 5 students and parents: 6.00pm in the school hall.
Presentation to Year 6 students and parents: 7.00 pm in the school hall.
School uniform is available to purchase on this evening.
Activities Afternoon
July 2020
The final event in the transition calendar enables all Year 6 students to take part in their first House competition for Ryedale School! Organised into their House groups, students participate in an afternoon of rounders, assisted by our Year 10 Sports Leaders. As well as being a fun and competitive afternoon, it provides an excellent opportunity for students to meet and get to know students from other primaries with whom they will be sharing a form.
