Some year 10 student’s recently took part in a Business and Enterprise Day at Thomas the Bakers. On arrival students were given a talk by the site manager, who had worked for the company for over forty years. The students were told how Mr Thomas had set up the business , how it had grown from being run from home, to a one room business, to now having over thirty one shops. Students learnt about the decision making process in the business, budgeting, stock management, marketing and analysis of markets. Before lunch a tour of the bakery was given where pupils learnt how technology had helped to change working patterns, hours and conditions.
The afternoon began with a talk by Katie Atkinson, a Chartered Member of The Royal Town Planning Institute. Ms Atkinson also represents, ‘Helmsley in business’, and spoke about her journey and decisions which led to her setting up business in Helmsley. This gave students a chance to ask questions about setting up start-up businesses, and where they might get advice and help in doing so. The day finished with an Enterprise Challenge. The challenge was competitive and the brief given was, ‘ How can businesses attract footfall and increase customer spending in Helmsley all year round?’
Our students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and commented the following;
I thought the day was amazing and inspiring and it made me think about what I would do in the future as a job. I am glad I have been given the opportunity to do something like this.’
I found the trip engaging and I liked the fact that we were shown around the factory it showed all the jobs and areas of work that were involved in the business, from receptionist to baker, packaging, storage and the freezers. The whole trip showed us how to use team work and business planning to create ideas for events and products.’
A huge thank you goes to the staff at NYBEP who organised this event in collaboration with school, the businesses and staff in Helmsley that made this event possible, to Mrs Thompson who kindly escorted students to and from Helmsley, as well as the year 10 students who have once again excelled themselves.
