Extra-Curricular Activities and Whole School Productions

At Ryedale we offer a wide range of dance and drama activities outside the classroom, with a view towards involving as many students as we can. Our weekly lunchtime clubs are open to all, but run seasonally in order to make room for larger, more substantial projects. In drama, this might include large-scale summer productions in our studio theatre, with auditions open to students of all year groups and a run of public performances, or extra-curricular projects specifically designed to challenge and extend our GCSE drama students in Years 10 and 11, such as the Year 11 Play or the annual Shakespeare Project.

The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz

The centre-piece of our calendar is the whole school musical, which operates on a bi-annual basis, allowing us to pursue experimental ‘revue’ style shows in the following year. Auditions for the musical are usually open to all year groups where students will be asked to participate in some singing, dancing and acting; the pupils who are chosen then rehearse intensively across the winter and spring terms, on lunchtimes and in after-school slots before a string of public performances in March.

Alongside opportunities to perform onstage, we also encourage students who take on performance support roles during our various productions, as set painters, members of the backstage crew or (for older students) lighting and sound technicians. These individuals are vital to the success of our productions and volunteers are always welcome!
