Scarborough and District Schools Sportsman and Sportswomen awards

The Scarborough and District Sportsman and Sportswomen was voted for at the Scarborough and District School sports Annual General Meeting held at Filey School. A committee of six physical education teachers from the Scarborough and Ryedale area considered nominations submitted from the fourteen member schools.

The awards recognise the performers who have competed at an elite sporting level in a sport offered by the Scarborough and District School Sports association. Excellence, attitude, commitment, teamwork and all-round sporting ability were taken into consideration.

The committee awarded Jacob Head from Ryedale School as the Sportsman of the Year. Jacob played for the Under 15 England Rugby Union development squad, and represented Yorkshire in the 2016 -17 season. He was 18 th in the National biathlon championships and County biathlon champion. Jacob has represented Scarborough and District at cross-country and athletics. He was a member of the Ryedale School basketball team who won the North Yorkshire schools under 15 championship. Jacob also assisted in the coaching of girl’s rugby at school.

Mowenna Talling from Ryedale School was awarded the Sportswoman of the Year. Morwenna has captained the North of England and Yorkshire Girls rugby union teams. She has represented Scarborough and District at rugby, hockey, netball, cross-country and athletics. Morwenna has been part of the Ryedale school netball team that was Scarborough and District champions. She also assisted in the coaching of girls rugby at school.

Both performers received a trophy and a letter of congratulations from the Scarborough and District School Sports Association chairman David Read, Head teacher at Scalby School.
